If you buy or sell text links on your blog then it’s important to know which locations on your blog you could use for text link advertising . As everyone loves a list I have compiled a top 7 list of text link real estate for blog although most of the suggestions will work for other types of site.
Now for a little explaining. A lot of my research is based on my own experience of buying and selling text links but also information extracted from text link ads.
The post
The posts are the most looked at part of a blog so it makes sense to locate any text advertising there. Popular options include paid reviews, contextual links and adding an Adsense or other text ad block into the first paragraph.
With the post itself being part or indeed all of the ad this is usually the most effective way to send traffic to an advertiser or indeed to monetize a blog. As long as the advertising is relevant then you will get clicks.
Navigation
The navigation bars on the left and right of blogs are often used for advertising. Blocks of text links, usually no more than 10, can be placed in these locations. They attract a moderate amount of clicks.
Footer
The footer of a blog can be used to house text links. Being way below the fold and usually out of view of most visitors the price of these links tend to be quite low. Webmasters tend to place links in the footer when they want the Search engine spiders to follow the links but not real visitors.
Linking positions for a purpose
Depending on the result the different locations on a blog page will have different click through rates. This will also be reflected in the cost of such links. When buying or selling text links the location is an important factor when deciding price and potential results.
