OpenAds and stuff you dont know

I still haven’t had a chance to install OpenAds and get to know it better. Still trying to decide if I should try it on this WordPress powered blog or one of my static HTML sites.

There are still a few things I’d like to know about how it works.

  • Can OpenAds manage text links that pass juice? I’m guessing the tracking requirements mean no. This could potentially discourage some advertisers.
  • Is it possible to integrate third party ads to track such as Text Link Ads? TLA code is PHP so I am not sure if you could integrate it for tracking.

In the meantime the ever industrious Mark over at 45n5 has posted a video showing you how to track ads in RSS feeds using OpenAds. By the way Mark has a great blog and whilst he is crazy it’s a blog you should subscribe to.

Stuff you don’t know

On a side note I recently noticed that when TLA does it’s updates your ads disappear and it can cause your site to not load properly. I noticed this with another of my sites and at first thought it was my host. After a bit of digging I discovered it was TLA’s PHP code.

It seems that sometimes when they are doing updates the PHP code loads very slowly and causes your site to partially load. This will be more evident if you place their ads near the top of your page.

I still use their service and think it’s great but it’s nice to know these things happen. So if anyone else ever has a similar problem they won’t need to spend hours trying to debug their site.
