The popularity of Adsense is due to it’s ease of implementation, the large advertiser base and the ability of the ads to be targeted to the theme of the site. This means that once you place the ad code on your site the ads will automatically display the most relevant ads based on your sites content.
Google Adsense are placed on your site by adding snippets of Javascript onto your pages. Every time a visitor clicks on these ads on your site you are compensated anywhere from a few cents to several dollars(although this is very rare). You should not under any circumstances click on your own ads or encourage your visitors to do so. This will result in your account being banned.
